Classification of Advanced Ceramics

Advanced ceramics can be classified into two categories based on their performance and functional use: structural ceramics and functional ceramics. Structural ceramics refer to new types of ceramics with physical and mechanical properties, as well as some thermal and chemical functions, suitable for use at high temperatures. They are also known as high-temperature structural ceramics. Advanced structural ceramics meet the needs of rapidly developing aerospace, aviation, atomic energy and other technologies for materials, in order to fully utilize their excellent properties such as high temperature resistance, corrosion resistance, high strength, and high hardness. According to the composition of structural ceramics, they can be divided into oxide, carbide, nitride, Boride, silicide and other types. Table 1-5 briefly introduces the main types of advanced structural ceramic materials from the aspects of material composition, properties, and applications.

Functional ceramics refer to advanced ceramic materials with non mechanical properties as the main focus. This type of material usually has one or more functions, such as electricity, magnetism, optics, thermodynamics, chemistry, biology, etc; Some have coupling functions, such as piezoelectric, piezoelectric, thermoelectric, electro-optic, acoustooptic, magneto-optical, etc. The ceramic materials produced by Kezhong are both structural and functional materials, such as 2r07, A12 03, SiC, etc. Functional ceramic products are characterized by many varieties, wide application, frequent replacement, small size, high added value, etc., mainly including metal oxides and Titanate of Ba, Pb, Mg and Sr.

It should be pointed out that with the development of science and technology and the continuous emergence of new materials, the boundary between structural ceramics and functional ceramics is gradually fading. Some materials have both superior structural properties and excellent functions. Of course, structural ceramics and functional ceramics cannot be completely separated, and functional ceramics also have basic requirements for mechanical properties. Some structural ceramics have other functional characteristics, such as silicon carbide, which is a common grinding material, but its semi conductivity can also be used as a high-temperature heating element.
