The characteristics of the large back feed slow feed grinding process

In the late 1950s, a new approach was explored in surface grinding, which was to maintain the linear speed of the grinding wheel within the conventional grinding speed range, increase the back feed, reduce the workbench speed, and make the grinding wheel work like milling to achieve grinding accuracy and surface roughness. This gradually developed into the current large back feed, slow feed speed point, and large back feed slow feed grinding process.

The significant characteristics of large back feed and slow feed grinding are:

(1) It has a strong backing force, a long contact arc between the grinding wheel and the workpiece, a high material removal rate, and a few working reciprocating strokes, saving the workbench reversing time and idle grinding time. It can fully utilize the potential of machine tools and grinding wheels, and improve productivity.

(2) Grinding wheel wear is minimal. Due to the low feed speed and thin grinding thickness, the grinding force borne by a single abrasive particle is small, resulting in reduced detachment and fragmentation of the abrasive particles; The workbench has fewer reciprocating strokes and fewer collisions between the grinding wheel and the workpiece. In addition, the slow feeding reduces the impact between the grinding wheel and the edge of the workpiece, allowing the grinding wheel to maintain its original accuracy for a longer period of time.

(3) Due to the small grinding force borne by a single abrasive particle, the grinding accuracy of the workpiece is high and the surface roughness is low. The profile of the grinding wheel has good retention and stable machining accuracy. In addition, the contact arc length can attenuate grinding vibration, reduce surface waviness and stress of the workpiece, and prevent grinding cracks from occurring.

(4) The contact surface increases the grinding heat, while the length of the contact arc makes it difficult for Cutting fluid to enter the grinding area, and the workpiece is easy to burn.

(5) Due to the large contact area, a large number of abrasive particles participate in grinding, and the total grinding force is large, it is necessary to increase the power of the grinding machine, which requires high requirements for the design of the grinding machine.
